The Prodigy: Raw creativity EN

“The Prodigy” is an electronic music group from the British rave-techno scene.

The Prodigy formed around electronic music composer and keyboardist Liam Howlett, notably after his meeting with Keith Flynt at the legendary rave venue “The Barn” in England in the early 1990s. The other members of the group are Keith Palmer aka Maxim Reality  (dance/vocals), Leeroy Thornhill, Roy Holliday (dancer), Sharky (guitar), Leo Crabtree (drums), and Ben Weinman (guitar). The group’s style is powerful, both in terms of their distinctive “Big Beat” sound and their visuals during concerts and in their music videos. The ”  Firestarter  ” video stands out, featuring frontman Keith Flynt’s unique performance that made music history.

Here is an article that retraces the entire history of this group .

Why talk about this group? Simply because they created their work organically and worked on demos with very limited resources in their early days and throughout their career. Howlett, the group’s leader, though somewhat reserved on stage and in music videos, recounts that when he presented his first demos, he didn’t yet know how the other band members would participate. They moved forward and built step by step, by feel. Test and learn.

It’s also worth noting that Howlett met Flint and Thornhill at a rave party where Howlett gave Flint a demo tape with his recordings. In short, their beginnings were instinctive and simple, and they managed to maintain their creative drive over time without selling out.

In an interview dated January 23, 2019, Howlett, Flint, and Palmer explained their working method and the recordings they regularly made in hotel rooms during their tours. They recorded ideas with limited resources, capturing sounds spontaneously and then reworking them to develop tracks. Deeply committed to a low-tech approach, they rehearsed very little in the studio. Improvisation and a love of sound, without over-intellectualizing: that’s their strength. It’s worth noting, however, that The Prodigy would never have existed without Howlett’s sound engineering. There’s always a leader…

You might ask, “What’s this article doing on this site, dedicated to project management and creativity methods?” Every great idea is born first from an instinctive, raw, and imperfect desire, and perhaps it’s in this form that it’s purest. Then, of course, behind every idea lies hidden work driven by a driving force (Howlett in this case). In short, raw creativity AND behind-the-scenes work. Food for thought .

And what are your sources of inspiration? Where, when, and how do you express your creative and vital energy? How do you then work on your ideas?
